Three-Day Youth Conference on Environmental Rights Begins in Surkhet

  • 3rd Nov, 2026

A three-day Youth Conference on “Environmental Rights of Youth and Children: A Foundation for a Sustainable Future” began today at Surkhet, and will continue until 4 November 2026. The conference aims to strengthen youth and children's participation in environmental protection, climate justice and policymaking.

The conference was inaugurated by Hon. Kalyani Khadka, Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forests and Environment of Karnali Province, in the presence of government officials, youth representatives, development actors and civil society organisations. Addressing the session, Minister Khadka highlighted the growing challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and pollution, emphasising the importance of youth leadership and active participation in environmental governance, climate action and decision-making processes.

The conference brings together 46 meaningful participants, including 32 youth and 14 institutional representatives from Karnali, Sudurpashchim, Gandaki and Bagmati provinces. Discussions will cover environmental rights, climate justice, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk reduction, waste management, forest fire control, sustainable agriculture and green employment, alongside sharing youth-led initiatives and innovations.

The conference seeks to establish a common Youth Declaration and policy recommendations to strengthen environmental rights, promote youth leadership and ensure meaningful youth participation in decision-making.

The event is organised with funding partner TDH Germany, in collaboration with implementing partners SAHAS Nepal, BYC Baglung, KRIN, AAWAAJ, CWISH, HRC and KIRDARC.

“Let us ensure the voices and meaningful participation of youth and children in protecting environmental rights and building a sustainable future.”
